A section of the Moses Montefiore Cemetery has been set aside so that families who are comprised of Jewish and non- Jewish family members can be buried together.
Policies and guidelines for Interfaith Section
These policies and guidelines are subject to change
- A Jewish person and his or her spouse and children can be buried together in the Interfaith Family Section.
- Immediate family includes non-Jewish spouses and children and spouses of children of lot owner.
- All caskets must conform to the same standards as Jewish burials.
- Only traditional wooden caskets and bottomless vaults are permitted.
- Non-Jewish religious symbols or ornamentation will not be allowed on gravestones or elsewhere on the cemetery property.
- No ritual or ceremonies inconsistent with the teaching of Judaism shall be performed in the cemetery area, and no symbols or insignia inconsistent with the teachings of Judaism shall be displayed there, whether permanently or temporarily.
- Burial services will be led or overseen by Jewish clergy.
- All burials shall be in conformity with Jewish customs and traditions as interpreted by clergy.
- Unless specifically stated otherwise, all rules that apply for the burial of Jews also apply to the burial of non-Jews.
- No burial can take place on Shabbat or Jewish holidays.
- Above ground burial is not allowed.
- All grave stones must be approved by the cemetery committee.
- Cremations are allowed in the Interfaith Family Section.
