The Moses Montefiore Cemetery was organized for traditional Orthodox Jewish burials. All burials must comply with Jewish Orthodox laws and practices in this section.

Policies and guidelines for the Orthodox Section

  • All deceased requiring burial at Moses Montefiore Cemetery must be Jewish. Non-Jewish spouses or non-Jewish children will not be accepted for burial in the orthodox section of the Moses Montefiore Cemetery.
  • Burials are not permitted on the Sabbath or Jewish festivals.
  • Ceremonies shall be conducted consistent with Judaic teachings.
  • Before burial, all deceased must have a TAHARA ritual washing, purification and be dressed in TACHRICHIM, white pocketless linen or muslin shroud.
  • If possible, the TAHARA should be performed by the CHEVRA KADEISHA (Holy Society) a religious service group as quickly as possible after death. Embalming or cremation is not allowed.
  • The casket should be a plain wooden one without metal or ornamentation.
  • A TALLIT or prayer shawl must be provided if the deceased is a male.
  • Grave markers and other decorations shall contain only Judaic symbols, insignia, and inscriptions.
  • Above ground burial is not allowed.
  • Cremations are not allowed in the Orthodox Section.
